During my seemingly never-ending job search, I recently came across two companies that have a rather odd way of doing business. Both are manufacturing. Both have been around at least 25 years. One of them I went to back in 1989 after it had been open for a few years. They had nearly 1000 workers. Now they have 150. The strange thing: they rehire 5 out of 7 depts every six months! I went over there after one of the many temp agencies called and said that they wanted me to go over there for an interview. The supervisor told me that, “The job is six months long…no exceptions. I don’t care how good your are, how great your attendance is (etc), the job will end after six months….” Well, being somewhat surprised, I asked why this policy. He said, “There has been no ‘offical’ explanation. A few years ago, I was told to systematically release people who had been here a certain number of years. After I did that, we began hiring only thru the temp agency. We had never used them before. Then I was told that I would have to hire an entirely new crew every six months...a total of 45 people every six months.” The other company I mentioned does the same, except their hire period is three months. I mentioned these two to the temp agency when I returned to them and asked why this could be. I was told, “One reason could be is that they don’t want to pay benefits…” So, my questions are: (1) Are benefits so expensive that a company can afford to hire a new crew every six months (or whatever)? (2) What benefit (pardon the pun) do temp agencies give a company over just giving out an application and interviewing and saying “You hired” or “get lost…”

Wow, that's pretty shady ... quote:
So, my questions are: (1) Are benefits so expensive that a company can afford to hire a new crew every six months (or whatever)? I think it probably depends on the company. I worked somewhere where I could have stayed for a long time if I wanted to. But they didn't pay me any benefits. They kept me part-time. They wanted me to go full-time and I would have gotten benefits but it was better for me to work part-time and spend the rest of the time working on my own business and also looking for work. I think it depends on the workers that you are hiring and the tasks. I'm pretty sure they don't have that policy with their IT people, lawyers, and upper level management. But you can do this with someone who works on an assembly line, does telemarketing, or any other type of job where you can train people within a few days to do the job. Just because you can do it, doesn't make it right however. quote:
(2) What benefit (pardon the pun) do temp agencies give a company over just giving out an application and interviewing and saying “You hired” or “get lost…” It takes a lot of time to find people, interview them, make sure they are the right fit, do any background checks etc. Basically, what they've done is just outsourced their HR department to the temp agency. If you think about the time it takes to do something like that and the money they'd have to pay someone - it probably makes sense for them to pay the temp agency to do it. Plus, you actually end up working for the temp agency, so you are not on their books - there's got to be some sort of advantage to that as well.

I wonder if this has something to do with what the company makes. I can see if your company was cutting edge tech production and you wanted to cut down on corporate espionage that this strategy could be useful.

No. I think it has something to do with the company having to pay into the unemployment insurance system after that time.

There is a certain company that was going to do just that with me this week. I have not heard back from the temp agency yet though.

I use to work for a factory a while ago. They had a ridiculously high turnover rate. Something like 200 people in a six month period. Needless to say, the working conditions were not good at all and most of the veteran workers were really hard to work with. The constant cursing and yelling and fights that were not mediated until they almost became physical was too much for me. When people would complain about them overworking us, they would simply threaten that there are 1,000 of people who would love to fill our spots. That gave me a really bad impression of the manufacturing life. I would pray to God just to get me through the day for weeks. The money was very nice, but at the end of the day, I didn't want to become hardened and angry like most of them so I made the choice to quit. Looking back, I don't regret that decision at all.

Companies, especially retail, don't want to pay benefits. That is why in retail only management and supervisor positions are full time. I have a friend who works 39 hours a week. If she worked 40, they would have to give her benefits.

Company policy. They state you can get benefits for full time, but anything under 40 hours is considered part time. In other words, they want 40 hours of work, but don't want to give benefits, so they give her 39 hours of work. They aren't losing production over an hour, and saving on benefits while getting as much as they can out of her.

benefits are expensive. but not that expensive. It wasn't all that long ago that full time jobs with benefits were the norm. And our economy was healthy and growing. IMO, a company that does this is not one I would want to work for. Why would you? There is absolutely nothing in it for you, not even enough time to get any experience that would matter. I think companies, ever bowing to to almighty dollar have shaved benefits out of greed. They are a cost of doing business -- oh, yeah, companies don't remember what that is anymore since they pass ALL their costs along to the worker or the consumer in one way or another. Bah to all of them.

Many states have some kind of law where, if you work a certain number of hours in a week, the employer is required to offer you the same benes as they offer full time workers. I've worked part time where I was offered benes based on my PT status., ie., I got a week of paid vacation at my level of average hours per week. I guess it's different in every state. This is one of those things where I wish we had a federal minimum standard that was the same throughout the country.

It depends on your employment status. Right now I am a contract employee without benefits. I don't think benefits are mandatory for full time "permanent employees".

The more the gobment messes with business owners, the more funky schemes you'll see to keep expenses down and the company solvent. The profit margins on most manufacturing businesses is very, very small and they can't afford a big hit like the new health care laws. There comes a point to where they'll just fold up and go else where... over seas.

I'm not one of those "let's just let businesses regulate themselves" types. We can see where that's gotten us over the last decade or so. Businesses need regulation, but it needs to be EFFECTIVE and not too burdensome. But they should not be in any shape, form or fashion rewarded for going overseas.

You have to remember that the cost of benefits are rising. They are expensive. The rate to insure our family was over $1200 a month. We paid about $500 of that, the company paid the rest. Multiply that by x number of employees, and you can see how expensive they are. I really don't think peopel understand exactly how much insurance costs. Add to that paid vacations, 401k matches, and continuing educaiton, etc.....That adds up. The smaller companies who don't get big discounts from the insurance companies are really hurting, so they are cutting out benefits.

Another problem is many companies don't even contribute to premiums, employees get it a bit cheaper only because they sign up as a group. Example- Insurance company a searches out company b and says ''if you sign up x number of people we will give it to them for x amount of dollars".

This way they don't have to worry about raises. I forget what the exact number is but if you have over a certain amount of employees you have to offer health benefits.

The biggest problem I have is those that intentionally discriminate in the hiring process. The jobs belong to the business owner, not the employees. When an investor can't make a return for ponying up their own hard earned cash, they take the investments somewhere else.
