I've been reading to my son since before he was born. He is now two and LOVES books. I dont necessarily agree with "Your Baby Can Read" to me, its just memorization and not really teaching them to read.

Reading TO your child should be done as early as possible. I read TO my children while holding them in my arms from tiny babies. And that is how they learned to read.

Same here, princess. I would not invest in "Your Baby Could Read" at all, and when they were newborns I would hold them and read to them.

Now they both love to read.

All of my children are avid readers.
My husband and I are both avid readers.
Our children have been read to since birth.
Our children are still being read to now.
Now sometimes our children read to us!
They all got their very own library cards at 5 years of age.

And there were no purchased programs involved. Just books from our own shelves or from the library and plenty of time and interaction!

Blessings,

Garsy

Reading to children is different that getting them to read early.

We read to them from the beginning. I see no need for an expensive program. Learning sight words and basic phonics can be a totally organic part of day-to-day life with little children. From the books you read to them, to pointing out letters on signs, to having conversations, to children's programming on TV. There's plenty you can do to immerse them in words and letters without paying a penny. And having done that, when they're ready to read, they'll let you know.

I agree with this. I as many here read to their child and actually thought about the program you mentioned, but I believe it may be more harmful than good.

I find too many parents push for their child to excel in certain areas and they lose their childhood before God's appointed time.

Read to your child, get them a library card, attend summer library book readings, allow your child to tell you a story from the pictures they see in a book, whether it is the same story or not. (encourages inventiveness and creativity)

Do not rush for your child to grow up as it can lead to their difficulty later on.

I have a neighbor who pushes her 4 y/o (same age as my son) and she has great difficulties with him with rebellion and anxiety. It is extreme, because she is a homeschooler yet is sending him to school, because she can not control him.

I believe it brings on resentment and the child harbors ill feelings because they lack simple enjoyment. (meaning it was forced upon them and not learning the joy of reading and all it has to offer.)

I agree with CMT. If their nervous system isn't up to the complex neurological tasks of reading, trying to push it will just frustrate them and could make them feel like failures.

So get them ready - read to them (some women read to the babes in their wombs. Well, the kids can hear them, so why not?). Let them see you reading the comics in the newspaper (who gets newspapers anymore?). Let them see you enjoy it and let them enjoy being read fun stories while cuddling in your arms.

Here's a trick to help them learn to read without pressure: when you read to them, follow the words with your finger, so they learn the markings are symbols of words. I know several children who learned to read that way, much to the surprise of their parents.

I've known people who liked it and their kid had fun with the program. It definitely calls for parental involvement, which is good. One parent was raising their kid to be bilingual, which slows down their speech, so they were using the program to help teach new words. I think it all goes back to how the parents "push" it and whether the child enjoys it.

Reading TO your child is important....each family has to determine if a child is ready to take it farther than that....for the most part...I would not invest in the program you mentioned. You can teach your child to read without it by just covering basic phonics....and they learn naturally/organically (in other words...when THEY are ready)....and that can vary from one child to the next.

Children should be read to (or told stories or rhymes) daily starting when they begin to make eye contact, at least a bedtime story, but hopefully more, as they grow older. Be sure to read them interesting things, not just books that are focused on being easy enough to be read.

And, it's important, that you read... for yourself, because you like it. Most things that matter are 'caught' not taught.

I have pretty much read to my kids since they were born. I taught them all to read, but used a reading program when they were five and we started school. I was never interested in trying to teach my babies to read. I was more interested in reading to them and giving them lots of things to use their imagination with like dress up clothes, blocks, play doh, outdoor exploration, etc.

My two older children are excellent readers. My youngest child has overcome a vision problem that was interfering with his ability to read and is now making progress.
