ORIGINAL: sunshinesoprano Do you think I should start taking the Metformin again or is this just a worsening of the condition? No, try these suppliments instead. http://www.ovarian-cysts-pcos.com/supplements-store.html Metformin is a fantastic thing for women with PCOS...it's enabled me to get pg twice thus far... If a person doesn't want to take Met. they can do cinnamon supplements & fenugreek as well as low carbing and working out at least 30 min. a day...if not more.

ORIGINAL: SweetLittleErin Well, I found out today that I am considered in this group. I went off the pill in April, had two normal cycles then stopped. I gained alot of weight but I assumed it was because in Feb I broke my foot and was on crutches until the first of April (actually the last pill and the day I started walking were the same). I assumed the weight gain was due to the fact I had to stop the gym and eat my husbands "cooking" (aka: frozen pizza and taco bell). But then my periods stopped. My doctor at first treated me with one round of Provera and Clomid. That did nothing. I start Metaformin today. How are you doing since starting treatment on metaphorim? Kim already answered, but Metformin did the trick for me. A couple weeks after starting it I finally had a period on my own (no progesterone treatment to start it), the next cycle I did not ovulate, but I think I came close (by temps), then I ovulated two cycles and got pregnant after an HSG (I think I also had a slight blockage, since they had trouble with the dye going through). I did take Clomid with this as well, though I really think it was unnecessary since the cycle we did get pregnant was without Clomid.

Personally, I've never found anything that works for me. And I've tried a lot. Dusty

Anyone know how much a healthy daily carb count it There isn't one. Different folk will tell you different things about what is healthy and what isn't ~ and what counts and what doesn't. Regardless of whether we have pcos or not, we should be cutting our intake of refined carbs and switching to unrefined carbs ~ brown rice, pasta, wholewheat flour, other grains (spelt, barley, quinoa etc). As a basic rule of thumb, your carbs shouldn't take up more than 1/4 of the amount of food on your plate.

I got pregnant with Jessica on the carbohydrate addicts diet. They allow one regular meal a day. I have found that within a week of getting back on after taking a vacation from dieting that I have to force myself to eat since I am just not hungry. http://www.carbohydrateaddicts.com/ I would loose weight fast if I would quite going on vacation. :0) quote:
ORIGINAL: SweetLittleErin Hmm...giving up fruit and milk is the biggie I am going to struggle with. I just bought a bag of apples! I think I'll cut them out AFTER I eat them, just in moderation. As far as milk...I like milk...it'll be a toughie. I need a place to be accountable to low carb eating...would this thread be okay for that? I dont really want to start one in Health and Fitness 'cause I never go there.

OK, does anyone else crave salt? I could literally pour salt out of the shaker and eat it. Sweets don't interest me all that much. None of my doctors have ever been able to explain this. Dusty

I personally don't crave salt in that manner. From the sounds of it, your doctors don't have an answer either. Hmmmm..... I'm happy with just eating chips or crackers every now & again, LOL. So far I have noticed that my appetite seems to be slightly reduced with the cinnamon. (Or maybe it's a combination of that & DH being gone). Um, where does one find fenugreek? (I think that's how it's spelled). I looked at Wal-Mart & didn't have success.

Craving a particular food can be an indicator that you're allergic to it. Fenugreek seeds should be in the herb/spice section of the supermarket. A health food store should have them.

As to sensitivity, I've never noticed any other symptoms of sensitivity to anything that I eat. Hmmm. Sounds like a little research is in order. Dusty

Thanks the info about where to find fenugreek. I ran a search & read a wiki article about it. It seems that it can help with diabetes (and that sort of thing).....but...it can further cause more irregularities in one's monthly cycles. Does anyone use this to help in their treatment of PCOS?

Fenugreek helps with PCOS because it helps naturally regulate your blood sugars...you can find it at your local health food store or online at one of the online drug stores...I've never been able to find it in any of my local grocry stores' spice isles...

Yeah, I'll have to look at a drug store or something. I did look at the spices, etc. and came up empty handed. How reliable are OPKs for women with PCOS? I'm just asking because when I tried them before...I didn't have much luck. It's something I'll probably try again around days 10-12...

"Ovulation Predictor Kit" Megan, according to the package that I currently have here, it says that some conditions and some medications may affect the use of the OPK, and they include in that list PCOS. I'm not sure how or why they would be affected.

I'm not sure how or why they would be affected. It's not so much that the PSOC affects the actual kit...but more that women with unmanaged PCOS don't usually ovulate on a regular basis. So, imo, it's a waste of money to buy them, especially if ovulation isn't happening every month. Even with OPK's, unless you're charting they're pretty much useless. If you test on say day 14 and your cycle happens to be a 35 day cycle and you don't ovulate until day 17 or later you're gonna get a negative. It's best, again, imo, just to get the PCOS treated properly and just have lots of fun with your DH whenever the mood strikes. If the PCOS is being managed then pg (in the Lord's timing) is most likely inevitable.

I *think* ovulation is happening every month. I base this on physical symptoms (pain on one side & increased CF). But I've never been able to have it show up on a test... Are heavy periods another sign of PCOS? Just curious...

Are heavy periods another sign of PCOS? Just curious... I sometimes have extremely heavy periods. I can completely soak a sanitary napkin in just an hour's time or less. By my third day, I am usually showing symptoms of being very anemic. I may go three or four months without a period. Then, when I do get one, it's like my body is making up for lost time. Then again, I wonder if this is due to my PCOS or because I'm perimenopausal. Dusty
