Hitting the highest note doesn't always qualify for the BEST tenor because it depends so much on the clarity and strength of the note and whether or not it sounds like screaming, shrilling, or true singing.

I would concur with DesireMore in the post above. Speaking of David Phelps, who is an outstanding singer, I might add -- two or three times while watching DVDs of his Power ending high notes with the Gaither Vocal Band (the kind that brings the audience to their feet in applause) -- frankly, I could not understand the words. He was on pitch, but his enunciation was lacking.
Another thought on the whole issue of high notes is whether they are singing with their "real" voice or whether it is a falsetto.

Yes, I do not enjoy hearing a tenor (or soprano for that matter) HAVE to go into falsetto to reach the high notes. Sandi Patti does that all the time and I really do not like to hear that type of singing.
I have been to literally hundreds of Gaither concerts and also many David Phelps solo concerts and have never noticed not being able to understand the words. Although it could possibly be because of the standing ovation and applause because his words are very clear on the rest of the song. I truly enjoy how easily he reaches the high notes without strain, turning red in the face or having his veins pop out of his neck. And I haven't ever noticed David going into Falsetto to reach the high notes. That's a TRUE Tenor voice. I don't have a good voice or far range in notes, but if I go into Falsetto, I can reach them. It's just not very pleasing to the ear. :o)

Of all the tenors that the Cathedrals had, (listen to some of the clips from the reunion), Bobby Clark still had to be the highest, smoothest and easiest to listen to.

What counts is how a guy sings the notes in the song with his group. Ernie and the Cats nailed "I Want To See Jesus" and it is one of his songs I love best. I will concede Ernie is not the highest tenor but he has been a consistent performer for nearly two decades as the following blog ably demonstrates on his signature song, "O What A Savior" where he hits F-sharp.

Heard The Dove Brothers sing "O What A Saviour" several times and I am pretty sure Jerry Martin can stand head to toe with Ernie.

No one has mentioned Larry Ford. He currently does not sing that high, but in his prime he could really get up there, though I have no idea what notes he could reach. Since some have mentioned quality though, I think he has always been tops in that category. When my daughter was in college, one of her professors who sang opera professionally, went to hear Larry Ford in concert and was blown away by his voice.

Curtis was one more fine tenor in his day. I haven't heard him in years but in his prime he was hard to beat..

I haven't heard anything of Allen Cox in several years but I heard him and Sue Dodge in a contest at GOGR in the 90's and he was a high singing tenor!!!!

For a great, clear, smooth tenor that hits full voice highs, and knows how and when to us falsetto to good effect, Bobby Clark was and is about as good as it gets.

I heard Bobby Clark sing a few years ago and he is still amazing. imho, he is the best the Cathedrals evre had. Mrs Weatherford talks about when he sang with the Weatherford's people would often be on their feet when he finished a solo part.

We lost a good Tenor today. You old timers may remember Jerry Redd that sang with The Plainsmen, Speer Family, Diplomats and Kingsmen. In his day he was a good one-------
