Anyone feel like making a snow angel????

LOL, the night before Thanksgiving, we got our first snowfall. It wasn't alot, but since it was a holiday weekend, my cousin and I decided to pre-bowl for our Friday night league. It snowed while we were inside, and when we saw that, we ran out without jackets (and I was wearing a really nice blouse) and made snow angels in the front lawn of the bowling alley.

I haven't done that in years....

No school again today. Our county is out - the adjacent ones are either out or on delays. It seems like the schools work that together to a point. (by county, I mean) Delays are delays but usually when I see one of the 'county's schools' closes they all tumble like dominos. I suppose it has to do with sports scheduling.

I feel bad - district band was this week so those kids just didn't go. They should have arrived at the host school yesterday and practices Wed-Thur-Fri for concerts on Friday night and Saturday.

We made it through with no closings. I know that we build 2 or 3 days in for closings and if we over that, the kids have to make it up, but I wish that if we didn't use them, they could have those days back. There are so many days wasted just because the kids HAVE to be there for so many days a year. Plus we have the WKCE testing and it really burns me because now that it is mandated, the teachers spend the first quarter of the year taking practice tests and getting ready. My daughter's class didn't have science or social studies for the entire first quarter because of that. All that time wasted when they could have been learning. If I had known that, I would have been complaining. But it really isn't the school's fault. They don't get their money from the gov. if the kids don't do well. Doesn't that sound backwards? I would think that schools who have kids not doing well would need the money more for extra resources like tutors, computers, or new textbooks instead of the old ones that alot of the schools still use.

Third day in a row with no school at many area schools. Many did go back today tho with a 2 hour delay. Not us. We have now used all our snow days and are tacking on days to the end of the year.

We are getting a lot of work done on Ethan and Zoe's science fair projects tho. Zoe's is in the observation stage and we built one of Ethan's solar ovens today. We'll try to get the other one done too.

Blessings,

Garsy

My puppy threw up all over the place today. I don't know what is wrong with her, but she ate and then threw up everything she ate and I know that it was everything because it was still whole chunks of food and the pile was almost as big as her bowl. I hope she is ok. I never had a sick dog before.

Tracy, I hope the puppy gets better soon. Sounds like she didn't digest it very well. Maybe she ate too fast?

Mountain schools not far from us will have school tomorrow (Sat). My kids feel bad for them.

We *may* get some snow late today and tonight. Seems to be headed our way this time, but where we're located, this alley, seems to be just on the outskirts of everything for the last year or two, so we'll see.

We got an inch, maybe 2 (I still need to shovel the driveway) so no school problems here.

I went to Kindergarten orientation last night. A waste of time (for me). I couldn't meet with anyone about Luke. It was mostly a look at the room and by the way have your doctor, dentist, eye dr. fill out these forms. So I put my information packets away for later. And my favorite Kindergarten teacher retired. The one who has worked there for over 30 years. They moved the other one down to 4K so I don't know either of the teachers.

But today is Valentine's day so at least the boys will have a nice sugar rush when they get home. Fun.

Debilyn, I haven't heard of anyone having Saturday school for a long time. I actually think it is better than going crazy long into the summer for school. I kind of remember having Saturday school once (or at least it was talked about) when I was a kid; the kids weren't too thrilled with that idea!

Tamara, do they test the kids during kindergarten orientation there? That is what they do here; they also like to know how many kids to expect.

Tracy, is your puppy feeling better today?

R went back to school today; she was home sick the last two days. Walking to school in the cold she started coughing so I asked the teacher to have her stay in for recess. She (R) wasn't too happy about that. But hey, she doesn't have to miss the Valentine party!

Got an appointment for the dogs at the vet at 3 PM today! Trying a new vet. Our last vet sent me a notice about 3 weeks ago that she was moving out of state and that she was leaving everything with her partners at the clinic. BUT I don't like any of the other vets there so Brian and I decided it was time to find someone closer to home. Our groomer recommended this new vet so hopefully it will be a good fit. Bubba needs his rabies shot and I KNOW we are behind on that. I think it was due in September. I just totally forgot about it. We also need to get his ears looked at. I think he has an ear infection and those need to be taken care of ASAP! The little one doesn't need anything done yet. Like my Mom I think we'll wait til she is about 6 or 7 months old before we do to much, just to let them get a little bigger first.

Kids are back in school today!!!!!

Just ordered some beautiful crocheted flowers online so I can use them in some scrapbooking stuff and to make hair ties for Zoe!

Blessings,

Garsy

I think she is feeling better today. She hasn't thrown up anymore and is quite playful.

Tamara, have you had alot of snow this winter? I forget where you are, but I know that it is usually pretty snowy compared to us.

Garcy, I hated trying a new vet for my new puppy, but believe it or not, my ex husband and his wife were very helpful in picking her out when we got her, helping out with the vet and just the little things that I forgot about when you have a puppy. I hope the new vet goes well. As it turns out for us, I love the Vet my ex suggested.

Today is a very slow day for me. I am off of work, my kids are in school, but my husband is working from home. I just feel so blah that I can't seem to get anything done.

I hope so too! I love our groomer so I called her this morning and she suggested two different vets - one of them that was tops on her list is just to far away for us, so I'm willing to try her second best who is a lot closer to home. I really value our groomers advice! She's been a groomer for 25 years and her and her husband have run their grooming and kennel business for the last 20 years! They also board horses and they hire local teens and college kids over school breaks and in the summer.

Got two e-mails from two different teachers from Aryn's school today. All is well - just follow up e-mails to my earlier e-mails. Now if only Ty's algebra teacher would get back to us.

Blessings,

Garsy

You know - I emailed BigBee's IEP teacher and she went to him, rather than calling me. To tell him she wasn't sure what I expected her to do.

Um, contact ME rather than question my judgement to my kid for starters.

Then it snowed...

I REALLY like this vet!!! Bubba doesn't. But that's only because she had to do an exam on some seriously hurting ears. Double ear infection two different types of bacteria! Nasty mess. I waited to long. So now he has 2 different meds twice a day everyday for the next 3 weeks! Not going to be fun at all!!!

blessings,

Garsy

We didn't have any snow days with this storm, and so far none for the year. I can't believe that we made it this far without one day off.

We had four snow days this week.

Hiya!

I'm venturing over here. I was a HS'ing Momma, and now my 7yo will be starting PS the week after next. WOW!! It's quite a transition for us...kinda nervous.
Any tips? She's never been to PS before.
Thanks
Sandy

Hi Sandy.

It can be kind of scary for everyone. We've stared in public school then went to a charter school, went back to public for awhile, home schooled, tried a private christian for a few years and now in public high school. It's been fun. Our kids transitioned well. My advice would be to make sure you don't get an attitude towards the staff. I had to repent of this. Stay involved as best you can.

Garsy, our Golden had a few ear infections awhile ago, but his were mostly in the spring and summer. Hope your guy feels better. I clean his ears out periodically.

Hi everyone. It's sunny out today and wondering when all the snow will melt????

Hey Sandy!

Welcome!

View the teachers as partners WITH you. Communicate OFTEN. Volunteer if you can. Ask about helping out in the classroom. Get to know the office staff - the school secretary is the number one source of information at ANY SCHOOL, much like a church secretary is at a church. Does your daughter know anyone at the school already? If she does the transition will be made much easier. Coming in mid year will be tough, but usually there will be other kids ready and willing to welcome the new kids.

We only have 9 boxes of cookies left!!!!!! Can't wait to be done!

One more basketball practice and 3 more games. Then we are done with that too!

Blessings,

Garsy

Hi Sandy!

I'm afraid I don't have any advice, my kids have always been in public school.

Hi Sandy!

I never tried to home school my kids, but they did start out in a small private school with class numbers of less than 10 kids per class, then we moved to a different private school which was bigger and stayed there for 5 years, but a few years ago, we decided to send out kids to public school.

They LOVED it. My son started out in the middle school and he just loved the variety he had and changing classes every hour and all of the extra activities and clubs he had available to him.

Kali was going into 1st grade when she started and had no trouble making new friends and getting used to a bigger school with different types of people and rules even though all of the other kids in her class already knew eachother from Kindergarten. She made lots of friends very quickly.

Kay was in 4K when she started public school and jumped right in.

We were blessed with wonderful staff and students and the school that they go to focuses on respect. That is their main thing so the kids are taught from day one that everybody is a friend no matter how different they are or where they came from. We even have many kids who didn't speak English when they started and they are treated no differently.

I hope your daughter has the same experience in the transition and as long as you stay positive and don't let your anxiety over the change show, she will be fine. Keep us posted on how she does.

Thanks everyone!
We're all excited for this. Neighbor kid goes to the same school, she's a grade ahead, but is super stoked that Amanda is going to school with her.
Amanda is really excited. I guess I'm afraid she'll struggle with the routine and strangeness most kwim?
I will keep you posted! Next week is our winter break, so she starts on the 22nd

She might do really well with the routine. That was one thing that we kept when we brought Noah back home, because we realized through him being in school that he did better with more structure.

Will be praying for ya, Sandy. That first day was a LOT harder on me than it was on Noah. Plan something fun with the other kids (make cookies, have a friend over, etc), and plan to keep occupied. The first day will take forever. LOL

What Donna said!!!

I too found that Ty did much better with a structured routine that he got in school. Much better than I thought he would. It was MUCH harder on me than it was on him!

Blessings,

Garsy

Welcome Sandy!

When Isaac started public school this year it helped to work on organization and reminders (he needed a lot). It also helped to keep close communication with his teachers. We had to brainstorm some extra checklists for him because he had a lot more things to remember and organize. If the coming teacher(s) don't use an assignment notebook I would highly recommend buying one and asking for them to use it.
