Help with my new laptop - 3/5/2010 3:40:02 PM

Hi everyone

Thanks for all your advice on laptops. I ended up buying a Dell netbook. I figured it was the right price for my first foray into laptops. I'm still not sure I'm going to like the size, but I figured if I didn't like it, eventually I could get a bigger laptop and the kids could get this one.

Anyway, I have it set up, and I have my wireless router set up. I can access the internet.

How do I see my desktop from my laptop?

Can I use the programs on my desktop? I assume I would first have to install them onto my laptop. The netbook does not have a cd drive. I have an external hdd and I have a flash drive. Do I put the program cd's onto one of those and then load the software onto the netbook that way?

And, lastly. How do I set up email? My desktop has Windows Mail. My laptop has Windows 7 which doesn't come with email correct? I downloaded Windows Live essentials. Do I have to set up a hotmail account instead of using my old email address? How does that work?

Thanks for all your help!

You need to use the thumb drive to install programs on the netbook.

Win 7 is supposed to have better file sharing and home networking capabilities.. but I only have one laptop so I haven't been able to test it out. You should be able to share files , even music now through a win 7 network.

As for email I bought Outlook but you can download windows mail off the internet. You don't need a new email address.. however you probably can only download using a pop account to one computer.
There might be a way to share it but I am not sure how to do that.

If you use webmail you can check it from any pc.

How much is Outlook? Is it worth it?

Can you walk me through the process of getting the programs onto my thumb drive?

Outlook was 80 something dollars on amazon.com.

I bought it because I have a blackberry phone and some other apps that sync to Outlook.

All you need to do is copy the installer files (usually setup.exe) to the thumb drive. Sometimes on win 7 you need to right click + shift and choose run as administrator to install.

For e-mail I downloaded Thunderbird from Mozilla's web site. It's free and easy to set up. I sat down in front of my desktop and copied the settings from my account in Outlook. Works fine. The interface is a little different than Outlook, but I adapted. I also uninstalled Internet Explorer immediately after downloading and installing Firefox.

Regarding email:

Outlook may be worth it to you if you need access to email that comes through a MS Exchange server, like many (if not most) businesses use. However, Outlook is bloated and heavy and will bog down the Atom (or Neo) processor of the Netbook if all you are doing is checking web mail. If you do not NEED the calendar and contact connection features of Outlook, then there are several alternatives that are less expensive and require fewer resources on the computer. Thunderbird is only one of several.

Personally I use several gmail accounts for my main daily email, so I usually just use the web browser email interface most of the time. Though I do have a couple accounts connected with Thunderbird, I seldom use it. BecauseI am on and off so many different computers, I prefer to just use the web mail interface.

My employer uses MS Exchange email server but since I run Linux daily, Outlook is not an option (and I am thankful) so I use Evolution (which does much if not most of what Outlook does) for my daily work email.

One thing to bear in mind. Most email systems will maintain your email on their server. This is a good thing if you are going to be accessing email from various computers. If you install an email reader on your netbook, make sure it is configured to leave the email on the server. Otherwise you could end up with some of your emails on your netbook and the rest on your other computer.

Edited to say this...

I highly recommend AGAINST getting a hotmail account. I know many have them, but I dropped mine long ago due to their invasive EULA and their poor record at preventing spam. Just my thoughts.

If it were me, I would set up my netbook with Thunderbird for email, Chrome (or Firefox) for web browser, and consider getting a free web mail account that is not bound to my Internet service provider. I would use gmail, but that is because I deem it to be the best free web mail out there at this time. They also are in continual state of improvements and over the years their service always remained ahead of the others.

uncabeeil - I never thought of uninstalling Internet Explorer after installing Firefox. Are there any cons to doing that? Anything I could "lose"?

Also, if I install Word on my laptop, will I be able to access my desktop Word documents from my laptop?

My last two employers have used Outlook, but both provided a web component to check remotely, so you didn't need it at home anyway. I would check with your office.

Yep, gmail here, which also has a calendar feature that is very handy. (And all the other wonderful things that come with Google.)

Nope. (Well, if you set up sharing through a network, then yes.)

Also, I'm not sure I would uninstall IE just yet. You absolutely don't have to use it, but I have run across a few sites that require it to function properly.

You don't have to have exchange to use Outlook. I use it with a pop account.

I am using Outlook because I had a lot of job search information in Outlook 2003 .. I had a previous license from my former job. Also since I am the tech support person I need to know it.

I don't care for google.. it does not have the all in one functionality that I want.

Leave IE on.. there are some sites that don't show up very well.. the govt just got most of their websites working on seven. They are always behind.

Correct, you can use Outlook with any email account, Exchange, POP, or IMAP.

One thing I highly recommend is to never, under any circumstances, use Outlook Express. Just search the Internet for "outlook express security hole" and see why. It is possible, with a lot of work, to get OE more secure, but why bother when better programs are available for free.

I also agree to leave IE installed. Just because its there does not mean you have to use it. And in reality, most of its components are in DLL files that will stay on the machine anyway. When you delete IE, you only delete the application shell because a lot of its guts are used by other Windows components.

So leave IE on the machine. Just don't use it unless you absolutely have to. And then, make sure you have all security patches downloaded for it.

How do I set up sharing through a network?

Unless you want to share large files (like video), I'd skip sharing folders and set up something like Dropbox. That way you won't have to worry about having your desktop on to access the files and there won't be any problems keeping files synced.

I ended up installing Thunderbird on my laptop. How do I change the settings so that the email shows up on both the desktop and the laptop? I have Firefox on both the desktop and laptop. I have Windows Mail on the desktop.

Right click on your account in the list and select "Properties". After you get the properties dialog, click on "Server Settings". On that dialog, make sure there is a check next to the "Leave messages on server" option. This will instruct Thunderbird to pull a copy of the email from the server, but leave it up there so you can see it from other machines. Just make sure your desktop is also configured to leave email on the server.

Dropbox is cool! Thanks for sharing that, that should be just fine for what I need.

I'm having trouble with my Thunderbird email. I tried to send an email for the first time and I got an error message....
Sending of message failed.
An error occurred sending mail: Unable to authenticate to SMTP server smtp.mts.net. The server does not support authentication (SMTP-AUTH) but you have chosen to use authentication. Untick 'Use name and password' for that server or contact your service provider.

I can't find where to fix this. As far as I know, I never selected using authentication, and everything I've found in the settings confirms this so I don't know why it's not working.

Right click on the account, select "Properties" then "Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings" and then "Add" (or "Edit" if there is one already there). Once you get into editing the outgoing server, make sure you put in the server name correctly for your email provider.

Once you have configured an outgoing server, make sure you have specified that as the default one to use on your account.

A couple of settings may fluctuate depending on your server. Usually you can google for the Thunderbird settings for most major email providers.
