Any ideas about what Mystery Babylon represents?

To understand the term "Mystery Babylon", we need to examine the meaning of these two words as revealed in all the Scriptures. In the NT, the word mystery (musterion) means something which was kept hidden in the past but is now revealed. Thus we have the Mystery of Godliness, which is God manifest in the flesh (1 Tim. 3:16) or the appearance of Christ on earth, and we have the Mystery of Iniquity which is Satan manifest in the flesh (2 Thess 2:7), or the appearance of the Antichrist on earth. The first is past and the second is future. When we come to "Babylon", we need to see that this word stands for everything on this earth that is associated with false gods, false religions, false worship, false Christs, and every other fallacy and lie that impacts the eternal destiny of human beings. It also encompasses all debauchery and gross immorality as well as all idolatry. When we see Mystery Babylon portrayed as a whore with a cup in her hand, we see the connection between spiritual whoredom and physical whoredom, and the mystery pagan religions had both in conjunction with each other. There is a close connection between the city of Babylon and Mystery Babylon. Yet Mystery Babylon is also a city that sits on seven hills. Rome certainly qualifies in that regard, but Mystery Babylon's influence is not limited to Rome. In brief Mystery Babylon is essentially human "religious" rebellion induced by Satan against the one true and living God and His Christ, and includes the persecution and killing of His saints and prophets. Both Babylon and Mystery Babylon will be severely judged during the Day of the Lord, and all their adherents will be cast into the Lake of Fire for eternity.

Great post, Ezra. What do you suppose the names of blasphemy are?

ORIGINAL: WilliamFloyd Great post, Ezra. What do you suppose the names of blasphemy are? This is not an easy question to answer, but I believe God has given us an indication in His Word. Firstly, what does the word "blasphemy" mean? It is a transliteration of the Greek noun blasphemia (verb blasphemeo, adjective blasphemos) which means speech defamatory of the Divine Majesty, speaking contemptuously of God and sacred things, speaking evil of God, railing against God (see Vine's Expository Dictionary). Secondly, what is the connection between "the scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns" (Rev. 17:3) and "a beast rising up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy" (Rev. 13:1)? These two beasts are one and the same *beast* (world dominating politico-religious system), which consists of (a) the Antichrist, (b) seven kingdoms or nations which are in collusion with the Antichrist and (c) ten kings or political leaders associated with these kingdoms or nations, who have the spirit of the Antichrist (Rev. 17:7-14). Satan is "the dragon [who] gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority" (Rev.13:2), and therefore, in turn, the Antichrist is the one who causes the whole world to worship Satan (the dragon) and himself (the beast): "And they worshipped the dragon which gave power to the beast: and they worshipped the beast saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?" (Rev.13:4). Thirdly, we come to the meaning of the "name(s) of blasphemy" which finds its culmination in the Man of Sin, the Son of Perdition, "that Wicked", the Antichrist (2 Thess. 2:1-10), who not only pretends to be Christ (anti means in place of) but also opposes Christ (anti also means against). The climax of his opposition to God and to Christ is to speak contemptuously of God, to oppose God publicly, and to revile God and Christ with a great reviling within the temple of God at Jerusalem (a future temple) while claiming to be very God himself! (see Daniel 8:10-12;23-25; 9:27;11:31,36-38; 2 Thess. 2:1-10; Rev. 13:1-18; 17:7-18). For a fallen creature (and that too one who is totally evil) to call himself "God" is the ultimate blasphemy. But to speak evilly and contemptuously of the Lord God Almighty and also oppose Him publicly is an even greater blasphemy. Thus the "names of blasphemy" are the names by which this Man of Sin will call himself (as well as the names by which God names him in Scripture) in order to inspire awe and worship of himself and of Satan. The amazing thing is that God allows this for 3 1/2 years in order to bring His judgments upon the earth. In a secondary manner, "the names of blasphemy" also include the names of all the pagan false gods of Babylon, Egypt, the Middle East (including Allah), Greece, Rome, India, Asia, Africa, and North and South America. Since these were all inspired by Satan in order promote false worship, they too rightly belong with "the names of blasphemy". We must not forget the names and titles given to Mary by the RCC, as well as the names and titles taken by the Pope and his hierarchy of cardinals, monsigneurs, and priests. Furthermore, for Protestant and evangelical ministers of the Gospel to take the title of "Reverend", "Most Reverend" etc. is also to take the names of blasphemy, since "holy and reverened is His name" alone (Psalm 111:9).
