This is all the posts I've made on another side pasted into one about what's been happening : Earlier today while watching a live broadcast online (in chrome) I got a random message about a firefox media player plugin doing something wrong; a few minutes later the whole laptop had froze up so I restarted it. When I logged back in all I was getting was the mouse cursor on the screen. I kept restarting for a while, trying safe mode & all that and eventually it came back on normally but it's now stuck on the black screen/mouse thing again. Right now after leaving it sitting like that everything seems to have opened normally but it took ages to get to that. Searched online but as usual didn't find anything useful. Avast didn't find anything, and by 1am it was all working again and this morning it was ok but it's went again this afternoon. First it froze now it's stuck at 'Welcome' after I put in my password. It did a disk check thing there and said it was removing a corrupt file or two but it didn't give any details and now i'm back at the never ending Welcome.... Trying Safe Mode and it won't open now either. Getting this for the 2nd time at startup - "deleting corrupt file record segment" Got this at one point also - app.bl87yEIQuTvEqIk4yz4YZQ.6: aim6.exe - Corrupt Disk The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the Chkdsk utility on the volume C: Chkdsk ran again (and took a long while) now its saying Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restar your computer. 2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next." 3. Click repair your computer." No startup options work at all, I have ran startup repair 3 times now, the last time it seemed to be working through something and completed but when I restarted it went straight back to 'Windows failed to start'. I really do not want to do a clean install of Vista cos I know i'll lose everything thats on it. Should add that when I tried System Restore on the Restore disc it said I don't have any restore points!

Honestly it looks like you have already LOST everything on it. From what you have said, it looks like your drive is corrupt. There are not alot of ways, if any, to recover that. One thing does give me pause, The plugin popup does sound like a possible virus, but I have never heard of one that acts like that.

I eventually fixed it yesterday, at least got my files back but now it can't connect to the internet. Getting this message now - A cable is not plugged into the network adapter 'Local Area Connection' Thinking I might just start emptying everything off the laptop onto this pc i'm on just now and try to completely wipe the laptop.

Backing up all your files to the desk system is a good thing to do. Whatever you can get off the laptop's hard drive. Then do a full reformat. Do not do any of the minimum versions as they do not really wipe the slate clean, it just erases the current equivalent of the File Allocation Table. You may even consider buying a new hard drive for the laptop. They are not expensive and it will be an absolutely clean install. If the drive is getting flakey, this may happen again. (not with a new HD) If it was a virus then you know it is not lurking in some sector of the new drive. Besides, you can get a bigger drive ( and can't we all use that?)

It sounds like there is a bad sector (or sectors) on your hard drive. It depends on where it is located.. so you might be able to use the hard drive after the format.. but you might not. Best Buy sells hard drives so if you are in a pinch you can run up there and get one..if you don't have time to order one online. But it definitely sounds like what happened with my laptop.. I formatted it but it gave different errors after the reinstall so I had to get a new hard drive.

I asked the guy who fixed one of my pc's before what he made of it and he said if the network adapter's doing what it's doing, then that it's dead and gone. I don't know if I can get a new one but I can use the USB WIFI thingy (the technical name escapes me) to get online for the moment. Still working on transferring everything to the PC - lost the memory stick!
