I learned something about backpacks over the last few years. I always got the kids their backpacks at Wal Mart of Big Lots for as little as possible while still trying to let them have a choice. By February they were trashed looking. So when DD asked for one of those duffle bag kind of backpacks for middle school, I went on Land's End. I about swallowed my tongue because they were nearly 50 dollars! But we sucked it up and bought one. She used it for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. So in the long run those cheapy ones were costing more. In high school, DS's backpack was usually filled with books, and gave out midway through the year; I ended up buying him a higher quality one that has lasted a couple of years. I also got DD1 a messenger bag type; both of them were not that much more expensive than the cheap ones. They were brands that I was more familiar with.

Check out the Staples ad online, because there is a $5 minimum purchase before you can buy the 1 cent items. There also are limits to the 1 cent items. Also, the copy paper is a regular size package (500 sheets, 250 sheets? - man, I can't remember) , but it is a mail-in rebate for basically the purchase price.

Yes, I didn't see the $5 purchase for the pencils and folders. However, they had backpacks 25-50% off so I got my DD's backpack today. However, the 1 penny sale is only good till Wed. You can do the rebate online so it processes quicker.

I have three lists already. Don't have the high schoolers stuff yet, but I'm assuming he'll be able to reuse some of his binders from last year so he'll need a some notebooks and loose leaf paper and maybe a few folders and of course pencils and pens. List #1 - 4th grade: 1 24 ct Crayola Crayon (we have these already) 1 8 ct Crayola markers - fine line 1 12 ct Crayola colored pencils 24 #2 pencils ( I likely have enough pencils for her and at least one of the middle school kids) 2 red pens 2 Highlighters (pink and yellow) (I think we may have these already too) 4 color pack Dry erase markers chisel tip 1 Black Sharpie marker. (I bought these in bulk a few years back and just ran out last year) 2 pink Pearl erasers 1 large Elmer's Glue stick - (2 small will do if need be) 1 bottle Elmers's School glue (4 oz) (have already) 1 wooden ruler (have already) 1 pencil box (have already) 2 packages of 3x5 cards 3 packages of 3x3 post-it notes 3 spiral notebooks (have already) 2 packages loose leaf paper wide ruled - (I'll make sure to have extra of this as ALL my kids will be able to use it and it stores nicely from year to year) 8 pocket folders (I have enough for her, her middle school brother and almost all for her middle school sister - I might have to buy 5 or 6) 1 large box Kleenex 1 calculator (already have it) 1 book bag (have already) Gym shoes (have already) The stuff in red is what needs to be purchased for my 4th grader. List #2 6th grade: Pencils - (have already) Pens - (have already) highlighters - will buy just in case Colored pencils (1 12 pack for regular class use and 1 24 ct for art) 2 glue sticks (I might have these) Binder with 5 folders (for core classes) 3 other folders (for electives) Zippered pencil pouch 2 packages of loose leaf paper 1 package 3x5 cards (I know better tho - I'll buy at least 2 for him alone!) 2 packages of post-its 3 spiral notebooks (have already) 2 boxes of facial tissue (I'll buy one and include a note that if they need more they can call me) One more of those fancy calculators - TI30XIIS 2 dry erase markers earbuds if taking music exploration/keyboards (already have) List #3 7th grade: Fancy calculator TI30XIIS (already have this one - and it's PINK!) Ruler (already have) pencils pens (have already) 3 glue sticks 3 packages of loose leaf paper 2 packages of mulit color 3x5 cards (I'll buy at least 4) 2 large boxes of facial tissue (I'll buy one and include a note that if they need more they can call me) 8 folders (already have 3) 3 dry erase markers for math 3 ring binder for algebra with dividers (she has this already from last year) 3 ring binder for S.S. with 3 dividers 1 spiral notebook (already have) 2 package 3x3 post-it notes ear buds for Music keyboarding (have already) 1 package of overhead markers (I'll check into this and see if I can talk to the teacher that requires these) 1 package of colored pencils (she already has these) 2 highlighters (she already has these) 1 pink eraser (she already has this) Graph paper (again I'm going to talk to someone about this - What size? lots of different graphing paper out there!) Both of these two will also need 3 different size sharpies and fine tip and wide tip markers for Art. The 7th grader may have her art pouch already packed or rather never unpacked! There you have it. And around here the elementary school is the only ones to offer the prepackaged kits. Doesn't make a lot of sense for me to get the prepackaged kit when I have to go to the store and shop anyway and buying in bulk usually means cheaper for me, ESPECIALLY since I have a lot of the 4th graders supplies anyway. Blessings, Garsy

Regarding backpacks ... my mom always bought me a nice Jansport bag. I had one for HS and another one for college. Both are in one piece still in my garage. I use it to store other bags (I have an addiction, I know). Jansport also has a lifetime guarantee on them, so if they do get ruined, they will replace or fix. Jansports are well worth the $60 for them. Regarding school supply lists ...... they are ridiculous what they require you to get. I don't understand why the middle schools require 1 3 ring binder for each class. No wonder our kids have bad backs .. they're carting around 60 lbs of books every day. I love that they are in HS and they just need whatever they want to get through the day and do their homework. Pens/pencils/paper, a couple notebooks, a binder, a cheapie calculator (the one thing they each haven't lost), and some 3x5 notecards. We have highlighters and colored pencils. Rarely do they have specialty items in HS. Although here in Cali they make you buy gym clothes from teh school. $50 for shorts/t-shirt. I can buy that at CVS for less than $10. And year books??? Over $100 now days!!!! YIKES!!!!!

Well then I'd be sitting in detention with my kid. 1) I would not buy classroom supplies. 2) There's no reason to haul all that stuff to school when it isn't needed. It may be convenient to get all your supplies before school starts, but in case you can't afford it, there's no reason to insist on three packages of paper (or multiples of something else) the first week of school.

I understand your point of view but these detentions/lack of recess etc. continue until you do bring everything in. No exceptions. Our school district gives out the supplies list with the end of year report cards so we do have over 2 months to save and get it all.

I think it's standard to provide a box or two of tissues. I hear about extra credit for getting the supplies, or detention for not, or some variation thereof. I disagree with punishing the kid because of the parents, though. On more than one occasion I've told my step-daughter to turn in a note from me saying something to the effect of, "Kymberly could not complete this assignment because I did not have the means to get the supplies," or something like that. It's wrong for the teachers to punish the kids because the parents can't, won't, or don't do what is necessary.

Here are my problems with classroom supplies: 1) Asking for them at the beginning of the year pre-supposes they'll be needed at all. Not all of them will. 2) Not every parent can afford all the supplies. By asking for things for the classroom, it makes their list longer and less affordable. For those that can't afford anything, everyone else is required to pick up their tab. 3) I question most supply lists at all, especially when brand names are given. A ruler is a ruler. If a child is required to have a wooden ruler one year and a plastic one the next, that's a waste of money for the family. If a child is required to have a wooden ruler and a plastic one is half the price, that's a waste of money for the family. A ruler is a ruler, as long as it is long enough and has the appropriate measurement markings. I think supply lists should be very basic, with parents being alerted after school starts if there are special projects coming down the line that will need special supplies.

The only person that suffers from you (general you) refusing to get the required supplies is your child. I don't agree with or like the fact that I have to provide dry erase markers, hand sanitizer, tissues etc for the classroom but I'm surely not going to make my child suffer the consequences of not complying.

I think supply lists should be very basic, with parents being alerted after school starts if there are special projects coming down the line that will need special supplies. Now personally I would much rather have the long lists and KNOW the special supplies stuff at the beginning of the school year when everything is on sale. I'd much rather buy 8 packages of loose leaf paper at a quarter a piece now then finding out say in March that one of my kids needs more paper, when the paper cost $1.25 a package. As for affording all the supplies - I have been known to get what I can, and on more questionable items (like wooden rulers vs. plastic) I will try to contact the teacher before school starts (between registration day when I find out which teacher my child has and the first day of school) and ask if we can use something else. Last year for 3rd grade the list asked for those crazy plastic folders. Difficult to find and more expensive than the paper ones and from experience they really don't last any longer. So I went in and asked Zoe's teacher if she had a preference, or if I could substitute paper folders. Her teacher told me that she actually preferred the paper ones. I've done the same when it came to sharpies, dry erase board markers, facial tissues etc. The only brand name that I stick with is Crayola. Seriously. They last longer and provide much more vivid color! Other than that I don't stick to brand names. As for punishing kids for a parents decision. - I called a high school teacher out on that a couple years ago when my son got a zero on a supplies grade. It was MY decision not to send the extra box of tissues and I told her that. I explained that having 4 kids things got terribly expensive this time of year but if she needed more tissues toward the end of the year that she could contact me and I'd gladly get some more, but for now ONE box was plenty. She saw my side of things - and never did call me to bring in more. Blessings, Garsy

I don't have a list yet, but, have had plenty of warning that ds needs a very expensive calculator. His backpack also needs replaced this year. I'll start with those first and hopefully we will have a high school list soon.

My Dd had 3 kids in elementary school last year. Every list wanted multiples of things like crayons, pencils, kleenex, etc. She called one of the teachers and was told that the extras were for kids who didn't have their own supplies. She told her that she would be buying for her own children, not everyone elses. I don't think the teachers should have to pay for suplies out of their pockets, either. If a child can't afford supplies, the school district should come up with them. After all, they are getting about $40 a day to teach the kids.

And that $40 dollars needs to go to pay for things like electricity, teachers salaries, buses, text books, and a plethora of other things that are NOT on the supply lists. I don't like the idea that some parents can get by without paying for their own supplies for their own children. Perhaps there should be a system set up to which folks like you and I could donate school supplies to our schools and those in need - REALLY in need can come in and do their shopping at a reduced cost. And any money generated would be put right back into purchasing supplies for the following year. Blessings, Garsy

I would have no problem with a teacher or school district asking for donations. It's the idea that parents should be expected to pick up supplies for others that bothers me. And truthfully, if a district begins to see signs that parents are balking at buying supplies, I think they should take a good look at what they're asking for and possibly make adjustments. A friend's little boy was required to bring a disposable camera to school and it was never used. At the end of the year she asked about it and the teacher said she had an idea for a project and then changed her mind. She was just going to keep the cameras the kids brought and maybe use them another year. My friend asked for her camera back.

I remember a conversation with my aunt about school supplies. She says that she gets a budget to buy them for all the kids. The parents don't have to buy anything. But after she spends her allotment, she has to buy the rest out of pocket.

What really bothers me is that our school system spends millions on a sports complex and other rrmodels, but still asks parents to donate $37 every day our student is absent.
